Photos of the landscape and interior of Laura and George W. Bush’s Texas ranch house are featured in the August edition of Architectural Digest.

The former first couple shared details of the design and construction of the famed “Western White House” with the magazine, offering a rare look inside their personal spaces and the 1,600-acre grounds.

Mrs. Bush, whose father was a builder, tells the magazine how she worked closely with architects to recreate the one-story style of spec houses her dad constructed in the 1950s and 1960s.  “It’s slightly motel-ish,” she says of their three-bedroom Crawford retreat, “but we love that.”

At their “motel,” the Bush family has hosted heads of state like Russian President Vladimir Putin and Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, as well as the 2008 wedding of their daughter Jenna.  The Bushes now live in Dallas, but they still escape to the ranch for family gatherings and holidays.
