Acting Chief Information Officer, U.S. Navy
Kelly Fletcher said people are often surprised that she has achieved so much in the often male-dominated IT workforce. But the acting CIO of the Department of the Navy tries not to let such comments be off-putting. “People are surprised or shocked or interested, and I try to take that as … of course they’re surprised. If you look at the number of women in IT leadership roles, it’s not very big. It doesn’t mean that they think I shouldn’t be in IT. It just means they’re surprised,” Fletcher told FedScoop.
She advises other women to take calculated risks in their careers. “I think it’s been really rewarding,” she said, “for me to get out of my comfort zone, take a deep breath, do something I’m not sure I’m going to be successful at, do something I’m scared to do.”
