Two singers, two piano men and one Oscar winner will receive the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors.
Musician and songwriter Carlos Santana, opera singer Martina Arroyo, keyboardist and composer Herbie Hancock, pianist, singer and songwriter Billy Joel and actress Shirley MacLaine will be celebrated this December for their outstanding artistic careers by the president and the first lady and the Kennedy Center board of trustees.
“The Kennedy Center celebrates five extraordinary individuals who have spent their lives elevating the cultural vibrancy of our nation and the world,” said Kennedy Center Chairman David M. Rubenstein.
Tributes from colleagues and peers will cap off a weekend of feteing the honorees at the annual gala Dec. 8 at the Kennedy Center. The event always brings a slew of Hollywood and music legends to Washington.
CBS will televise the ceremony Dec. 29 at 9 p.m.
