HUD gets clean audit thanks to IT modernization

When Chief Financial Officer Irv Dennis joined the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 2018, its financials were in disarray, audits were a mess and IT systems were antiquated with “lots of paper processes” still around, he said. Because of this, the department hadn't issued a clean, audited financial statement in years. But thanks to the work HUD has done with the General Services Administration's IT Modernization Centers of Excellence, the department completed its first clean audit in eight years in December. Army Reserve gets cyber general

The U.S. Army Reserve has named its first cyber general. Newly promoted Brig. Gen. Robert Powell will serve as a deputy commanding general of cyber for the 335th Signal Command, specializing in overseeing the unit’s cyber-activities. Jackson Barnett has more.


Microsoft says SolarWinds hackers accessed company source code

The SolarWinds hackers viewed Microsoft source code, the tech giant said last week in an update of its internal investigation. But it denied reports that its systems were used to attack others. It found little harm overall. The company was spare with some details, however, such as what code the hackers viewed, and Microsoft said its investigation is ongoing. Read more on CyberScoop.


National cyber director role in the spotlight after SolarWinds hack

Also on the topic of the SolarWinds hack, experts are stressing the importance of a national cyber director role within the incoming Biden administration. In particular, the role could prove instrumental in preparing for future emergencies like the one at SolarWinds — one of the most serious incidents of digital espionage in U.S. history — by ensuring more even implementation of the National Cyber Strategy across departments.
