National AI Initiative Office launched by White House

With just a week left in the Trump administration, the White House launched the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Office, fulfilling its requirement to establish an office responsible for coordinating artificial intelligence research and policymaking across government, industry and academia. The office will implement a national AI strategy under the leadership of Founding Director Lynne Parker, who also serves as U.S. deputy chief technology officer — at least for the next week. Despite the upcoming transition, Parker's boss, U.S. CTO Michael Kratsios, said the new office "will be integral to the federal government’s AI efforts for many years to come, serving as a central hub for national AI research and policy for the entire U.S. innovation ecosystem." Air Force accelerates toward zero trust

The Air Force is accelerating the move of its mission-critical applications into zero-trust environments. The move comes, says the service's CTO, as telework remains a looming new normal across the federal government. It will be “several years before we all get back to the office, if we ever get back to the office,” said Frank Konieczny. Jackson Barnett has more.

State website listed premature resignations of Trump, Pence

The State Department experienced a bit of a blunder this week when something — either a disgruntled employee or a glitch, depending on the report you read — caused biographical webpages for President Trump and Vice President Pence to display premature ends to their terms in office. The timestamps kept being pushed back, with the one for Trump reading Jan. 11 at 7:49 p.m. before a message appeared on both pages stating the State Department site was “currently experiencing technical difficulties.” The incident didn't go unnoticed — the internet caught wind of the mishap quickly and began running wild with speculation. Dave has more.

DOD expands 5G efforts in new competition

The Pentagon announced a new competition asking for help to design software and endpoints that will use the 5G wireless telecommunications capabilities. The forthcoming competition tasks participants to build open “5G protocol stack software,” a core component for using the physical network hardware already being tested by the DOD. While yet to launch, the competition is a step in expanding the DOD’s work testing 5G with private sector companies. Reas more on DOD's 5G efforts.

Zero trust: Evolving government security

FedScoop this week launched a special report examining the federal government's adoption of zero-trust cybersecurity. The report, which will be updated in the weeks following its initial publication, explores the evolution of zero-trust security architectures in the federal government as it operates more and more decentralized networks with users accessing data and services from the cloud.
