A call for protest reform

The Pentagon's Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract has been tied up in litigation for more than a year now, and because of that, award winner Microsoft has been forbidden from starting work under the procurement. Brad Smith, president of Microsoft, doesn't think it's right that a single protest could completely derail the acquisition of such a necessary technology and expressed to the Senate Armed Forces Committee on Tuesday that he believes the federal procurement protest process must be reformed. The real victims are the federal agencies that cannot move forward quickly acquiring the technology and services vital to supporting their missions, he said. “How do you move quickly when the protest process moves so slowly?” Jackson Barnett has the story.

The perils of VPN dependence

While federal agencies moved quickly to scale up the use of virtual private networks to support remote work during the pandemic, many are now realizing the perils in doing so. In particular, agencies are looking to segment their data because the technology provides more internet exposure than advocates of models like zero-trust security are comfortable with. Airmen automate menial taks

The Air Force’s Vice Chief’s Challenge yielded 15 winning ideas based on technology to help automate menial tasks and give airmen new opportunities to get their hands on code. Winning ideas ranged from chatbots for financial management systems to network monitoring software to improve cybersecurity. And now those ideas will be given the resources to pilot, test and scale across the Air Force. Jackson reports.

The urgency for federal financial authorities to leverage cloud

The speed and impact of technology changes in the financial industry are putting enormous pressure on government officials and financial regulators to keep up. Olivia Peterson, a federal financial service executive with AWS, discusses how agencies like FDIC and FINRA are embracing cloud strategies to develop advanced data and analytics and to scale to meet new demands.
