Liberal telework at USDA

Even when it's safe to bring employees back to physical offices, Agriculture Department Secretary Tom Vilsack wants to give personnel up to four days a week to telework. The move is in line with the telework policy Vilsack introduced in 2014 — back when he was first in charge of USDA under President Obama. In 2018, President Trump's Agriculture secretary, Sonny Perdue, took the agency in a dramatically different direction, dialing the policy back to allow only one day of telework a week. Billy Mitchell has the scoop.

Move fast or lose the race to AI

The National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence — a congressionally mandated committee of business leaders and former government officials tasked with exploring and issuing guidance on DOD’s use of AI — submitted its final report to Congress and the executive branch earlier this month. In it, the commission issued a constant reminder of the importance of AI and the danger in moving too slowly to adopt it. Its thesis is quite simple: Field artificial intelligence quickly or risk losing the next big war. Jackson Barnett has more from the report.

Want Bitcoin? GSA has you covered

The General Services Administration is known to auction off some pretty interesting items from federal holdings: old vehicles, office supplies and IT equipment, even land. But Monday the agency announced a first. It's planning to auction a .7501 share of one Bitcoin, valued at roughly $38,000 as of publication, on March 15. “This auction marks the first time cryptocurrency will be made available for public sale through GSA Auctions,” a GSA spokesperson told FedScoop. “And it is the only piece of cryptocurrency to have fallen under the purview of the U.S. General Services Administration.” Dave Nyczepir has the story.

Project Overmatch gains network authorities

The Navy recently centralized some IT and network authorities under the newly created office overseeing Project Overmatch — the service’s stab at turning the concept of Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) into a reality. The authorities will allow the office to move faster in developing new IT and technologies to extend network connectivity across the seas, a Navy spokesperson told FedScoop. Jackson has this.

Biden administration faces second big cyber crisis

Federal officials scrambled over the weekend to respond to the widespread exploitation of Microsoft Exchange Server vulnerabilities. Incident responders estimated that tens of thousands of U.S. organizations could be exposed to the hacking, which started with suspected Chinese spies but suddenly has become a free-for-all. “This is a big F’ing deal,” as one U.S. state official put it.
