'Keep the hammer down'

Deputy CIO Bill Marion will wrap up a nearly 30-year career in the Air Force at the end of April. As he departs, he is urging senior leaders to "keep the hammer down" on recent IT modernization progress, he told FedScoop in an exit interview. “The challenge always in government is do you have the funding? Do you have the people? Do you have the leadership? Do you have the vision? Do you have the plan?” Marion said. “And I can confidently say we’ve got those in place, and now it’s further acceleration to delivery.” Billy Mitchell spoke with Marion.

CMMC for non-defense contractors?

The Department of Defense's new cybersecurity standards could be coming to the non-defense federal contracting community in some form or another, according to Katie Arrington, the Pentagon’s CISO for acquisition and sustainment. The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program is a five-level system that all contractors in the DOD's industrial base will need to comply with, or face losing business with the Pentagon. The hope is it will blunt the rash of cyberattacks on defense contractors by ensuring they are practicing good cybersecurity. The same would certainly be true if the standards were applied to the civilian world. Jackson Barnett has the scoop.

Reading between the lines on TIC telework guidance

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency released new Trusted Internet Connections (TIC) 3.0 interim telework guidance April 8 that says teleworkers can access cloud services directly using transport layer security, a virtual private network (VPN) or virtual desktop infrastructure. But reading between the lines, the guidance also says providers must be able to send telemetry data to the National Cybersecurity Protection System’s EINSTEIN team. Fedscoop spoke to industry experts about what this means. Dave Nyczepir has more on the guidance.

DOD shared Microsoft information with AWS

The Pentagon's inspector general dropped a lengthy and long-anticipated report into its investigation of the Joint Enterprise Defense Infrastructure (JEDI) cloud contract this week. In it, the IG details publicly for the first time that DOD officials sent Microsoft's proprietary information to losing bidder Amazon Web Services in debriefing documents. The report claims that AWS used that information as part of its resources to inform the 265 debriefing questions it sent to the DOD after it was made aware of its loss, the new report says. “By disclosing Microsoft’s proprietary information, the DoD also potentially provided AWS an unfair advantage in the cloud services marketplace,” the IG says. Billy has the latest on JEDI.

Improve security practices with better data insights

Federal agencies preparing modern cyberdefense plans can minimize the ultimate impact ofan attack with better insights across their networks. That’s why IT executives should consider investing in a platform that’s able collect, leverage and understand enterprise data, according to a new Splunk report. The report details how modern platform solutions, capable of operating as a “security nerve center,” are better suited than many specialized tools at identifying gaps in network defenses.
