SBA's working capital modernization

The Small Business Administrations stands out as one of the few agencies using a working capital fund under the Modernizing Government Technology Act to propel its modernization efforts. Deputy CIO Guy Cavallo said recently that the agency has $6 million in its fund, marked for seven projects. Considering SBA’s annual total IT budget of $28 million, “it was a decent-sized chunk,” Cavallo said of the money in the fund. In addition to driving new technology, Cavallo hopes the fund will help break the agency out of the end-of-year, use-it-or-lose-it blitz to buy IT hardware by giving it an option to save any leftover IT money. The position co-leads the Federal Data Strategy and chairs both the Interagency Committee on Statistical Policy established by the Paperwork Reduction Act and the new Advisory Committee on Data for Evidence Building created by the Foundations for Evidence-Based Policymaking Act. The Office of Naval Research's new leader

The Office of Naval Research has a new leader. Rear Adm. Lorin C. Selby will oversee part of the Navy’s efforts to stabilize the small- and mid-sized technology companies working with the military as the economy convulses due to the coronavirus pandemic. The office is seeking to shell out more than $250 million in the next few weeks so companies that work with the Department of the Navy can stay afloat. “I’m excited and honored to take command of ONR,” Selby said. Jackson Barnett reports.

Zscaler brings zero trust to the Pentagon

The Defense Innovation Unit sealed a deal with Zscaler to pilot a secure cloud management solution that may eventually provide zero-trust access to about 500,000 concurrent Pentagon users. The prototype will allow DIU users to directly access the internet and software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications in Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure while they are operating off-network, regardless of their location or device. Silicon Valley-based DIU aims to accelerate its adoption across the Department of Defense over time. More from Dave.
