NIH launches coronavirus data sharing platform

The National Institutes of Health has launched a coronavirus research platform using Palantir's Foundry tool to collect and analyze clinical, laboratory and diagnostic data from a host of health-care institutions. Called the National COVID Cohort Collaborative, the platform will support universities and grantees studying coronavirus health risk factors and treatments. NIH "initially supported the development of this innovative collaborative technology platform to speed the process of understanding the course of diseases, and identifying interventions to effectively treat them,” said Director Dr. Christopher Austin. “This platform was deployed to stand up this important COVID-19 effort in a matter of weeks, and we anticipate that it will serve as the foundation for addressing future public health emergencies.” Dave Nyczepir has the story.

Cyber grants proposed for small contractors

As you know, cybersecurity can be tough for small defense contractors, especially with new standards and certifications looming. So, lawmakers want to issue grants to help small manufacturers reach compliance with new cybersecurity guidelines like the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC). A new bipartisan bill, sponsored by Jimmy Panetta, D-Calif., and Joe Wilson, R-S.C., reflects the general concern Congress has for securing the Department of Defense's supply chain through the CMMC program and others. The proposed legislation authorizes the Pentagon to issue funds to Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) Centers, the public-private partnerships that assist small manufacturers, with the intent of helping those kinds of companies reach compliance. NSA pilots DNS service for the defense companies

The National Security Agency has launched a pilot program to secure Domain Name System use for U.S. defense contractors from malware-based threats. The NSA’s cybersecurity directorate has been working on the pilot, called secure DNS, for six weeks, the directorate’s chief, Anne Neuberger, said during a virtual event last week. “Our analysis highlighted that using secure DNS would reduce the ability for 92% of malware attacks … from a command and control perspective, deploying malware on a given network,” Neuberger said. The NSA is collaborating with the Defense Digital Service on the pilot. CyberScoop's Shannon Vavra has the story.

How agencies can use data to maximize services while teleworking

Business strategies that integrate the use of aggregated data concerning service availability, employee performance and security will help agencies respond effectively in times of crisis. And as long as the government workforce needs to operate away from the office, agency executives can lean on a data strategy to make informed decisions on mission operations, says a new white paper from Splunk.
