Army refreshes its data strategy, with an emphasis on trust and security

The Army wants its data to be visible, accessible, understandable, trusted, interoperable and secure. Those are the six leading principles of the service's newly revised data strategy, which CIO Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford teased at a recent event. It reflects the need to move quickly and securely to leverage information assets against adversaries as the Army adjusts to new great-power developments. “Right now we’ve got structured data, we’ve got unstructured data, there are various states and it kind of is where it is,” Crawford said. “But if we want to achieve outcomes ... we’ve got to fix the data problem, and the first part starts with the actual strategy.” Billy Mitchell has the story.

'Kicking out the adversary' is part of new Cybersecurity Directorate's mission, NSA says

The National Security Agency’s new Cybersecurity Directorate — charged with helping protect the defense industrial base and sensitive government computers by providing insights on foreign hackers — is now at initial operating capability, officials said this week. Outreach to industry will be crucial, the NSA says, because the agency not only wants to alert organizations about threats, but also give them information about how to eradicate intruders. “We need to be sure that people who own networks that are vital to the national security systems and defense systems of this nation can figure out if adversaries have gained access into their networks,” NSA spokesperson Natalie Pittore said. “It’s about preventing but also kicking out the adversary.” CyberScoop’s Shannon Vavra heard from NSA leaders at Fort Meade.
