Microsoft beats out Amazon Web Services for JEDI contract

Friday evening, the Pentagon delivered the surprising decision that Microsoft won the $10 billion JEDI cloud contract over Amazon Web Services. Despite the ceiling on the contract, the minimum guaranteed under it is just $1 million with a base order period of two years. “The department projects that user adoption will drive an estimated $210 million of spending during the two year base period. The DOD will rigorously review contract performance prior to the exercise of any options,” the department said in a release. Now, we'll have to wait and see if AWS protests the decision. The company said it, too, was "surprised" by the award. Billy Mitchell has more on the award.

New NSA cyber directorate prioritizes standards for security of military’s emerging tech

We've heard a lot about the new Cybersecurity Directorate at the NSA over the summer from our colleagues at CyberScoop. And last week at CyberTalks, Anne Neuberger, who heads that new directorate, gave us a glimpse inside its early priorities for setting security standards around emerging technologies like 5G, IoT, cloud and more. “We picked the technologies we think are the game-changers in terms of use and in terms of a need to address, and we’re working with our key customers — whether with DOD, national security systems, or with [the Department of Homeland Security], critical infrastructure — to say ‘How do you want to use those?’ And then let’s build secure use cases,” she said. “Let’s understand what the technology needs to change to make it useable from a security perspective and work from there.” Billy has this one too.

Reps. Hurd, Kelly engage Bipartisan Policy Center to help draft a ‘national framework’ for AI

Republican Rep. Will Hurd has been talking for about a year now about creating a national framework around AI. Last week, the Texas congressman and his colleague Robin Kelly, D-Ill., made headway on that goal, announcing they have called on the Bipartisan Policy Center to help build it out. The D.C.-based think tank will convene and host a series of meetings with experts and advocates from “across the political spectrum” to discuss the policy challenges presented by this technology. The discussions will culminate in a strategy that Hurd and Kelly hope will help guide both Congress and the executive branch. Tajha Chappellet-Lanier has more.

Also at CyberTalks, Federal CIO Suzette kent detailed her 2020 priorities around IT security. After rolling through a major checklist of IT modernization policies over the past year, she's ready to move on to things like cross-agency information sharing, improved identity management and increased workforce cybersecurity literacy, she said. See her priorities here.
