New job for JARVISS: Coronavirus tracking for the Army

An Army system built for monitoring terrorism threats has a new mission. The Joint Analytic Real-time Virtual Information Sharing System (JARVISS) has been adapted for real-time tracking of the spread of the coronavirus. Originally created in 2018 in response to base shootings like the one at Fort Hood, Texas, the system pulls data from an open-source collection of information supported by Everbridge, a company that primarily works on emergency mass communications. Now the system is compiling open-source information about the spread of the illness to keep Army personnel safe. Jackson Barnett has the scoop.

VA’s EHR transition could cause ‘patient safety risk’

The Department of Veterans Affairs' inspector general has released two reports that paint a grim picture for the eventual launch of the department's modernized electronic health record. One details the potential risks to patient safety the department will face as it transitions from its legacy system to the modernized EHR at the first medical facility in the Pacific Northwest. The VA has done a poor job of planning for such risks, the report says. And the second report finds a host of issues in the EHR's underlying infrastructure that could cause further delays to its nationwide rollout. More from the new reports.

Bill Zielinski leaving federal service

Bill Zielinski has announced that he will leave the federal government after nearly 30 years of service in June. Zielinski has served as a “critical member” of the General Services Administration's Federal Acquisition Service leadership, who has been “instrumental” in the government’s transition to the $50 billion Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions telecommunications contract, said Julie Dunne, FAS commissioner, in a staff email obtained by FedScoop. Prior to joining GSA, he held roles as CIO of the Social Security Administration and as chief of agency oversight in the Office of the Federal Chief Information Officer. Dave Nyczepir has more.

Navy earmarks $30M in grants for innovative small businesses

The Office of Naval Research is offering $30 million in grants for companies that can provide innovative advanced technology to the Department of the Navy. The grants come as part of a larger effort to send money through the Navy’s supply chain to ensure companies that work with the department stay afloat during the pandemic. The service says it expects to award more than $250 million over the next 90 days to small businesses. Jackson has more on the Navy's supply chain.
