Was it 'AI theater' or the future of air combat?

In a recent DARPA-led competition, artificial intelligence once again got the best of humans, out-maneuvering an Air Force F-16 pilot in a virtual reality dogfighting scenario. The result is likely not surprising, given AI's reputation of beating out humans in competitions like chess and "Jeopardy" for the better part of the 21st century. Experts are pretty evenly split on whether the tests are meaningful to the future of air combat or just for show. “I appreciate that the DOD wants to show the world that it is on the cutting edge of AI deployment, but this simply is not it,” one expert told FedScoop. Long-term success eludes federal CDOs, survey says

In a new survey, federal CDOs express that despite knowing what's expected of them, they're not sure exactly how to achieve those outcomes. CDOs recently surveyed by the Data Coalition reported spending more than half their time collecting and preparing data for analysis, a challenge possibly solved by automating such processes. An additional 61% of respondents cited budget constraints as a “significant” barrier to their work and 50% said simply defining their role was a problem. Dave Nyczepir has more from the survey.

VA launches new scheduling platform

The VA is another step closer to modernizing the care experience of veterans. At a medical center in Ohio, the VA launched a new scheduling software application to plan visits for veterans in need of care — an integral part of the VA’s Electronic Health Record modernization journey. The new software, officially introduced Aug. 21, will allow health care providers at the VA Central Ohio Healthcare System to schedule appointments in a central software platform, as opposed to the current disparate set of legacy systems that involves manual coordination. It’s time to rethink how we handle, view, and work with classified info post-pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the fact that we must do more to remain competitive when dealing with the nation's classified information, SAP's Mark Testoni says in a new op-ed on FedScoop. COVID-19 must be a wake-up call that to sustain this critical public-private partnership we must take a hard look at what really needs to be classified, who truly needs a clearance, and how we can maintain a nimble, skilled, and diverse national security workforce while still protecting our nation’s secrets, he says. Read Mark Testoni's op-ed.
