CMMC inches closer to an official regulation

Requirements language for the Department of Defense's new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification could soon hit contract solicitations. FedScoop learned Tuesday that the new standards have completed the interagency review process and will head into an open comment period once an interim rule is published. Once that happens, CMMC will be an official rule in the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulations, something the DOD expects by the end of the year. At that point, all defense contractors will need to be certified at one of CMMC's five levels without exception. Jackson Barnett has the latest.

DOD wants help figuring out spectrum sharing ahead of commercial 5G auction

The DOD is planning to share some of its mid-band spectrum with commercial industry to allow for the development of 5G wireless communications. Ahead of that auction, scheduled for late next year, the department wants to explore alternatives and innovative solutions for how it might share the spectrum. It issued a request for information “to understand both the art of the possible, as well as current industry trends in spectrum utilization.” In the RFI, DOD asks questions on the feasibility of things like owning and operating 5G networks for its domestic operations and potentially leasing the spectrum rather than reallocating it. Billy Mitchell has more.

Before zero trust, Census must make it to the cloud

The Census Bureau has grand plans to move to a zero-trust security architecture. But unfortunately, it can't do that until it's fully moved over to the cloud, something that is a work-in-progress for the bureau, CISO Beau Houser said Tuesday. “I do believe that zero trust is going to offer a new paradigm for cybersecurity that I hope begins to level the playing field with the attackers because I feel the attackers still have the advantage on us,” Houser said. “And I’m optimistic that zero trust will help us balance that out.” Dave Nyczepir has the story.

Treasury looks to automation, blockchain in new projects

The Treasury launched a pair of projects this week to streamline how agencies manage their finances. Digital End-to-End Efficiency (DEEE), is focused on digitizing and automating entire business processes, rather than using robotic process automation (RPA) or artificial intelligence to expedite parts. And the second, Blockchain for Grant Payments, continues a 2017 effort to have grant recipients use the technology to digitally represent, or tokenize, payments, as well as redeem or transfer them. Google Cloud exec reflects on the promise of virtualization

Google Cloud’s Josh Marcuse says that virtualization is more than enabling online meetings. It’s that agencies can draw on a talent pool regardless of location. It’s that government can eliminate waiting, commuting and dead time with citizens, to focus on the meaningful interactions. To move forward, agencies need technology partners to help them meet four key areas: scalability, security, open standards and agility. Hear more lessons learned during the pandemic.
