DHS consolidating NOCs, SOCs together

As the newly appointed CIO, Karen Evans is leading the Department of Homeland Security to consolidate its network and security operations centers to ensure services remain available when analysts must investigate a cybersecurity incident. Speaking Wednesday at an ACT-IAC event, Evans said the new model represents a shift from traditional incident response, where the SOC’s goal typically is to take the system offline until the problem can be identified and fixed. “It’s the next evolution of providing and managing risk to keep the business going while we are then analyzing, being aware of and being able to protect our operations," she said. Congress again concerned with VA's EHR

Three things are certain in life: Death, taxes and ... lawmakers being upset about the Department of Veterans Affairs' electronic health record modernization. Despite the VA nearing the launch of its EHR next month in Washington state, members of the House Veterans’ Affairs Technology Modernization Subcommittee believe it's too out-of-sync with the Pentagon's new EHR to make the two adequately interoperable. “I have some serious concerns about its future course,” Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., the subcommittee’s ranking member, said during a hearing on the EHR’s modernization progress. He requested a revamped timeline from the VA to ensure that it will be able to be interoperable with the DOD’s. More from Jackson Barnett.

A "revolution" in defense

Congress also has its eye on the way the military buys, plans and prepares for the future of conflict. The Future of Defense Task Force is urging the DOD to invest more in artificial intelligence and take more risks during the acquisition process, or risk losing to Great Power competitors. The new task force, co-chaired by Reps. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., and Jim Banks, R-Ind., published a new report Tuesday listing recommendations for how the DOD should get rid of its legacy weapons systems and fully embrace emerging technologies. Jackson has this too.

Agencies rethinking cloud security amid COVID-19

When the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the federal government’s workforce to cloud-based telework, agency leaders were obligated to address security concerns and access risks to sensitive information. According to Google Cloud executive Dan Prieto, public sector organizations will need to evolve both policies and practices to mitigate these risks. He delves into the expanded perimeter with remote workers and the limitations of VPNs in a new podcast. Hear more from Prieto.
