What's the magic number for CMMC assessors?

No one knows exactly how many assessors will be needed to inspect the networks of companies in the Department of Defense‘s entire industrial base. FedScoop spoke with a pair experts Wednesday who think it could take between 1,000 and 2,000 certified assessors to audit the hundreds of thousands of defense contractors now required to get third-party verification under the new Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program. And so far, only 50 assessors have been granted provisional status to participate in assessments in so-called pathfinder contracts under CMMC. Jackson Barnett has the story.

GSA follows CMMC's lead

Speaking of CMMC, the standards may soon have a wider impact across the federal government. The General Services Administration has already added CMMC requirements to one $50 billion contract vehicle, and according to Keith Nakasone, a top IT acquisition official at the agency, more requirements like that are coming. CIO Council identifying governmentwide areas for IT modernization

The Federal CIO Council has its sights set on a number of IT areas across government that, with proper investment, make sense for modernization. New chip design lets agencies save big on data center operations

Federal agencies stand to gain significant savings and performance benefits with a new generation of microprocessors that will allow one server to do the job of five in a typical federal data center. Those savings and performance improvements represent a substantial opportunity for the federal government, which continues to rely on thousands of data centers for sensitive workloads that can’t readily be moved to the cloud. Read more about the new chip.

Data analytics and security platforms play key role in cloud migration

Even though cloud migration has been a mantra for federal agencies over the past decade, the pandemic made it starkly clear that all modernization efforts aren’t happening at the same pace. Splunk’s Ashok Sankar says that while leaders discuss modernization efforts, a combination of challenges makes it difficult to actually start the process. However, a collection of research shows that agencies are looking more to FedRAMP-authorized cloud services to help them speed up digital transformation projects. Read more insights.
