Here come the Cyber Guardians

The Space Force started onboarding its first cybersecurity personnel from other military services at the beginning of February. Most of those cyber personnel transitioning into the new force come from within the Department of the Air Force, which oversees the Space Force. In total, the force has brought in 2,400 of the 6,400 active duty cyber personnel it’s planning for, Gen. John Raymond, commanding general of the Space Force, told reporters recently. “There’s a spectrum of threats that are out there. Everything from reversible jamming of satellites and GPS satellites, communication satellites, GPS satellites,” Raymond said. “And there’s cyber threats.” Jackson Barnett has more.

A new cyber adviser at DHS

Tim Maurer will join the Department of Homeland Security as senior counselor for cybersecurity to Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, according to two sources familiar with the move. Maurer has been director of the Cyber Policy Initiative at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The role is one that a number of cybersecurity luminaries to pass through the department have held over the years, including the current acting director of DHS's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency, Brandon Wales, former CISA Director Chris Krebs and CISA's former assistant secretary for cybersecurity, Jeanette Manfra. Tim Starks has the scoop on CyberScoop.

Roper gets gig with Pallas

Will Roper, the recently departed Air Force tech and acquisition leader, has strategic advisory firm Pallas Advisors, the group announced Tuesday. In recent years, Roper was one of the military’s biggest boosters of emerging technology, especially artificial intelligence. As a senior counselor, he will continue to work on issues similar to those he led while in government — though his position is only part-time, according to the firm. More from Jackson.

ICYMI: VA won't heed GAO's advice on EHR stoppage

The Government Accountability Office came out with a scathing new report last week warning the Department of Veterans Affairs to stop the planned rollout of its electronic health records modernization program. The watchdog says the $16 billion system needs further testing or it may suffer a catastrophic failure. The program has faced critical shortfalls and the VA hasn’t tested in a way that could fully expose its weak spots, the GAO states in the report released Thursday. While the VA responded to the report’s findings by “concurring in principle,” it told FedScoop that it doesn’t plan to stop the rollout. More from the VA on its decision.
