Catalog management improvements coming to GSA

The General Services Administration wants to improve catalog management so customers can more easily search, compare and buy needed offerings. To do this, the agency is planning to acquire a web interface for managing and improving the quality of data collected for GSA Advantage! customers in the spring. This is but one of the big changes the agency is anticipating in 2021 under the Federal Marketplace (FMP) Strategy, a framework for making continuous improvements to GSA’s buying and selling experience. 5G at the Miami VA

Another Department of Veterans Affairs health care system has been upgraded with 5G networking capabilities. T-Mobile announced it has deployed its Ultra Capacity 5G service “in and around” the Miami VA Healthcare System, providing in-building coverage with average speeds of 300 Mbps and peaks at 1 Gbps. Billy Mitchell reports.

VR training to stop suicide

The Air Force has developed a virtual reality program to train airmen to recognize and help others at risk of self-harm. The VR training puts airmen in life-like situations to practice how to get a distressed person help. The rate of airmen dying by suicide has increased in the past few years, up from a 2018 rate of 18.5 per 100,000 to 25.1 per 100,000 in 2019. More from Jackson Barnett.

Going commercial mid-pandemic

Like many federal agencies, the pandemic forced the National Cancer Institute to rethink the IT it was using. Specifically, NCI began using Microsoft Teams to communicate with and administer telemedicine to patients in clinical trials, replacing the “expensive and not user-friendly” custom systems it had used prior.
