Modernizing the GI Bill

The Department of Veterans Affairs awarded a contract earlier this month to Accenture Federal Services to build a new platform to centralize GI Bill-related benefits processing. The “Digital GI Bill” platform aims to ease communications between veterans, schools and the government. The VA describes the platform as “an end-to-end systems management perspective to ensure proper compliance and oversight of GI Bill programs, and the use of data and business intelligence tools to track, monitor and measure school and student outcomes.” Jackson Barnett has more.

Updates to Air Force upskilling hub

The Air Force has launched an update to its Digital University program. Additions include new career pathways and course designs to organize users’ learnings around specific technical skill sets. “Technical training typically isn’t done well in the Air Force, so there is a demand to upskill our technical airmen for the jobs we need. DU was built to be that central hub,” said 1st Lt. Peyton Cleveland, who built much of the backend of the new course paths. Jackson has this too.

DDS 2.0

In interviews, the leaders of the Defense Digital Service detailed the evolution of the team over the past two years and how they've arrived at a sweet spot for the types of projects DDS takes on. Today, DDS exists as more of a digital first-response force, often working hand-in-hand with service members on the operations side when the department faces a “fire” that requires tech help — these days, pretty much any major challenge in the national security space. Reasons included the computer script for detection stopped working, lender submissions used employer identification numbers and Social Security Numbers interchangeably, and some buyers applied via multiple lenders, according to SBA's Inspector General. Dave Nyczepir reports.

New industry partnership promises to strengthen authentication security

A joint effort between Okta and AWS offers agencies a more secure approach to managing identity and access on a cloud-based platform. For federal agencies, even though the workforce is moving to a more hybrid environment, federal regulations setting access standards have not changed. However, policies like FICAM pave a path forward to architecting a zero-trust environment and industry partnerships can help IT leaders get there with the optimal tool integration.
