'Mixed feelings' about CMMC

The CIO of the Air Force is not the biggest fan of the Department of Defense's Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification. While Lauren Knausenberger supports the need for better cybersecurity standards for DOD’s IT supply chain, she worries that the strictness of CMMC will limit small innovative companies from working with DOD. “I have mixed feelings on it personally,” she said Tuesday. “I think if we lock it down so that we are not going to do business with certain people because they don’t meet [CMMC], I think that limits our options.” Jackson Barnett has the story.

Biden's pick to lead GSA

President Biden on Tuesday announced his pick for the head of the General Services Administration. And like most other top leaders already announced for the agency, the administrator nominee is a familiar face. Robin Carnahan founded and led the state and local government practice at 18F, GSA‘s tech consultancy, from 2016 to 2020, after having previously served as Missouri’s secretary of state. She faces Senate confirmation for the role. Dave Nyczepir has more.

DOD's latest 5G effort

As the Department of Defense expands its use of 5G technology in testbeds on bases across the U.S., Joint Base San Antonio will pilot the use of the technology to power its medical advancements. The National Spectrum Consortium recently shed light on the new capabilities the DOD hopes to achieve in San Antonio like real-time virtual medical support, enabling remote forces to connect medical devices and ensuring the security of new 5G networks carrying medical data. “There is a lot of opportunity to drive efficiency,” Randy Clark, vice chair of the National Spectrum Consortium, told FedScoop. More from Jackson.

More CMMC

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) Accreditation Body is focused on transitioning from a board of directors intimately involved in day-to-day operations into one that can strategically guide a scaled organization, AB board chair Karlton Johnson said in an exclusive interview with FedScoop. Now that the board has hired a CEO and other key staff, it is time to move on from a body of “director do-ers” to become a “governing board,” he said. In the interview, Johnson also touches on the AB's progress credentialing CMMC assessors, the board's past controversy and more. Read more of what Johnson had to say.
