TIC use cases

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency issued the first two finalized Trusted Internet Connections 3.0 use cases Wednesday to help agencies secure external connections to federal networks. The Traditional TIC Use Case details the “castle-and-moat” security architecture that most major agencies have used for a decade, while the Branch Office Use Case outlines networking directly to the cloud or an external trust zone — rather than directing internet traffic through a TIC access point or headquarters first. And there could be more coming later this year. Dave Nyczepir has more.

Navy testing JADC2 capabilities

The Navy has several major tests planned in 2021 for its network integration capabilities. Part of the wider military’s overarching Joint All Domain Command and Control (JADC2) concept, these tests will allow the Navy to put more data through its systems and unify more platforms with new applications at a greater scale, Adm. Mike Gilday said. He described the tests as “big spirals” where siloed networks are combined into a “network-of-networks” operation to give the service an Internet of Things-like capability. Jackson Barnett has this one.

NIH's COVID-19 data evolution

The National Institutes of Health launched the largest COVID-19 dataset in the U.S., the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) Data Enclave, in April. And now it wants to use privacy-preserving record linkage (PPRL) to link data from its enclave with medical images, omics tools, electronic health records (EHRs), and social determinants of health to answer researchers’ lingering questions like why COVID-19 symptoms linger in some patients. Why federal cybersecurity teams are prioritizing asset management

There are many variables for federal IT and security teams to consider as they prepare for the remote workforce to return to the office. While the complex IT landscape can make it hard to answer basic questions about what is on the network, asset management needs to be a concern for cybersecurity teams. Security expert Jake Munroe discusses a new approach to harnessing asset data to close security gaps. Read more from Munroe.

Government agencies lean into managed services to stay ahead of IT demands

Two-thirds of respondents in a new government survey say their agency is using, or considering using, managed service providers to meet their IT demands. Agency leaders are pressed for a new generation of IT skills and experience to deploy cloud-based IT, data management and cybersecurity solutions. As managed service models evolve, the study suggests that MSPs may play a growing role in how agencies modernize. Learn more about the findings.
