The red carpet inside the Cannon Caucus Room was not rolled out, but instead, covered in thick plastic when Congress welcomed VIP guests Thursday – Very Important Pets.

Animal rescue and shelter groups from across the District, Maryland and Virginia brought their most promising candidates to showcase at the Paws for Love pet adoption day. The House Animal Protection Caucus hosted the Valentine’s Day social in hopes that anyone looking for a perfect match might just find it in a four-legged companion. Cupid struck many times while cats and dogs of every breed and size mingled with members of Congress and their staffs. Organizers say at last count 20 adoption papers have been filed following Paws for Love.

The Animal Protection Caucus hosted a similar adoption event for Congress in July, and hopes to bring local shelter animals back to the House again later this year.
