Social media was abuzz Tuesday morning as workers throughout Washington D.C. got a glimpse of the Space Shuttle Discovery flying its last mission.

The space shuttle took off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida just after dawn, strapped to the back of a Boeing 747.

The flight took the shuttle up the east coach and then did a low loop over the capital’s airspace before landing at Dulles International Airport just after 11 a.m. EST.

The shuttle will now reside in the Steven F Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum in Chantilly, Va. There, it will take the place of the shuttle prototype Enterprise, which is bound for New York City.
