White House honors Girl emPower iPad app

In an international effort to empower women across the globe, President Barack Obama has announced an iPad app aimed at inspiring girls to serve as government leaders.

The Girl emPower iPad app was created by Laura Phelps and Andrew Cavanagh as part of the White House Equal Futures App Challenge to promote civic education and public leadership for girls. The app challenge falls under a larger initiative — the Equal Futures Partnership — launched by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in September 2012.

The app includes the following features:

  • A map highlighting women members of Congress nationwide. Users can access their biographies, read their latest tweets, review their websites, and more.
  • Videos of distinguished women leaders discussing their diverse career paths.
  • Fun facts about how the U.S. government works and a quiz game that tests users’ knowledge of what they have learned.
